Skin cancer is the most common cancer.  It affects men and women of all ages.  Melanoma causes the most skin cancer deaths.

As we gear up for summer when more people are likely to be exposed to the sun’s damaging UV rays, the 8th Annual Elizabeth’s Outrun Melanoma Virtual 5K and Walk is a perfect family activity to help raise awareness and support a great cause.

Proceeds of this race benefit the Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma Program at CHI Memorial Rees Skillern Cancer Institute, which supports the prevention, awareness, and research of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer.   In October 2018 CHI Memorial announced the ERS Melanoma program received the Melanoma Hope Network Center of Excellence designation, one of only 17 centers in the country, and the only one in Tennessee. This designation recognizes melanoma treatment centers and physicians that offer exceptional care, knowledge and compassion to patients diagnosed with advanced melanoma. It is through fundraising that we have the resources to continue to realize the dream of Mrs. Smith’s family and friends.  Each year this event along with other fundraising efforts take us a step closer to our goal of changing the daunting melanoma statistics in the Chattanooga region.

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for melanoma in the United States for 2020 are:
- About 100,350 new melanomas will be diagnosed (about 60,190 in men and 40,160 in women).
- About 6,850 people are expected to die of melanoma (about 4,610 men and 2,240 women).

The Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma Program focuses on establishing relationships with community partners to provide outreach, education, and screening while also connecting patients with the appropriate supportive and medical services.
-  These support services include nurse navigation, with our nurse navigators supporting 119 melanoma patients in 2019.
-   In 2019, 16 community outreach events were attended reaching nearly 3,131 individuals.

Our fundraising efforts are critical as the majority of services to be provided are not medically reimbursable and patients will not be charged.
